Where Are The Dads With Minivans

I drive a Honda Odyssey minivan.? I actually like it.? Why shouldn’t I?? Because it’s not manly?? Please.? It’s not like the 4 door Civic I drove last year, before getting the minivan, was any more manly.? And I don’t care what car you’re driving, snot on your shirt and cheerios stuck to your pants are not going to be cool.

The minivan has leather interior, 5 CD changer, and doesn’t struggle when you drive up a hill with the AC on.? It’s a shiny new car.? So why is it so bad for a dad to drive one?? I don’t get it.

When I pick up the Things at preschool every day, most of the cars are minivans.? But I never, and I mean never, see dads driving them.? Except me.? Are all they all laughing behind my back?? Or maybe they’re secretly jealous.

When we got the minivan, SuburbanMommy didn’t want to drive it.? She didn’t want to be one of those moms who drive minivans.? So it became mine.? I’ll say it again – I like driving a minivan.

If you are a dad with a minivan, where are you?? Come out of the garage.? Be proud.? Drive it like a man.

  1. Count me as another proud Honda Odyssey driver! We’ve had ours for seven years, and I’m not at all interested in driving anything else. It’s roomy, with enough head room that I don’t bump my head getting in and out (like on my wife’s Civic). We have lots of space to load stuff in the back. Take the seats out and I’m hauling 4×8 sheets of plywood or drywall. On vacations, we have more than enough room for suitcases, pillows, coolers, etc.

It gets great gas mileage, handles amazingly, and looks good in the driveway. What more can you ask?

  2. Love this post! I think they are all secretly jealous. One of my guy friends (a dad of three) swears he’d by a minivan if he didn’t live in Berkeley. He’s afraid of being pelted with expensive vegetables and hemp necklaces. Ha.

  3. My wife (Action Girl) keeps talking about getting a mini van. I don’t know. For some reason, I’m just not big on them.

That’s not to say that I’m a “Manly” man who only drives F-350 monster trucks and eats three penny nails for lunch. Far from it. My car is an elderly Subaru Legacy. I like the all wheel drive and the low profile that lets me load up the roof rack with out throwing out my back. Two kids and no dog fits the ‘bru pretty easily. If we had one more baby, I’d probably get a mini van though. Cars don’t make a man. That’s a silly notion. Obviously, it’s defined by grunting when lifting stuff and the ability to open pickle jars with no mechanical assistance (grunting optional).

  4. I’m so with you on this one. Leather, sunroof, great stereo and enough room to stash my beloved kids AND my beloved bicycle.

Nothing uncool about being there for your family and ensuring they get around safely and comfortably. Some of our neatest adventures have happened in our amazing silver wondervan.

I’ll never understand why society is so driven by optics.

  5. I’m not a fan of minivans, but… then again, I drive a Civic (seriously).

Personally, I’m looking forward to the SUV next year…

But, hey, I gotta give you props. If you drive a minivan, drive a minivan! No shame. (And if you’re gonna go minivan, the Odyssey is the way to go!) -B

  6. Sorry there is just something about it that makes me throw up in my mouth. Maybe it is the shape. I have a Highlander. The wife and I have committed to both being minivan free. But you can drive whatever you want and I will not make fun of you. It just ain’t my bag baby!

  7. Mini vans rule! Seriously, for the money, what other vehicle can you buy that has seating for seven plus cargo space, can be converted to all cargo space, and gets good mileage? SUVs that seat that many either have no cargo space or are so big you have to take out a home equity loan to fill the tank. I spend about equal time in our Dodge Caravan and Buick station wagon (yes, they do exist), and I’m proud of it!

  8. While I don’t drive a minivan, I have a friend who swears by it. He’s a contractor and has a huge truck to fill his ‘manly’ quota but goes on and on about how cool his Honda Odyssey is.

  9. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or
copyright infringement? My site has a lot of unique
content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any ways to help reduce content from being stolen? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
